Great Resource Reminder!

I know I posted about this last school year, but I wanted to put this back on everyone's mind. It's called NBC Learn. It is a GREAT research tool! The videos are on various topics and are searchable. There are also transcripts for each video. These videos will take you all over the world!

Students, Be sure to check out the section titled Writer's Speak. This section features some of your favorite authors talking about their books and the writing process they go through. There's also a section that features videos about common grammatical errors and how to avoid them. How cool! There is also a huge selection of science and social studies videos. Have fun!

Parents and teachers, You can sign up for your own account and create a favorites list for your favorite videos. These videos can then be shared with others. I can see how our teachers can use these to enhance an IB unit of inquiry! Wow! You can also sign up for a weekly email with new information they add each week.

I'll add the link to the links section on the right, but here it is now: http://archives.nbclearn.com/portal/site/k-12

Congratulations Mrs. Lastique!

This week at our weekly staff meeting, Parents for Public Schools stopped by to honor 5th grade teacher, Monique Lastique, with a 2013 Outstanding Educator award. The award is given for fostering student success, dedication to teaching, demonstrating a high committment to student achievement, engaging students in challenging and meaningful work, and interacting with parents as partners in the education process... all in the interest to better Jackson Public Schools. We are very proud of Mrs. Lastique! She joins other Davis staff who have won this award in the past... Stephanie Dees and Diane Setzer. And with such great teachers we have at Davis, I know this won't be the last time a Davis teacher is recognized! Our IB teachers here at Davis are the best!

The New School Year Begins!

We had a great first day of school! Students getting off the bus or being walked in by their parents were greeted by a plethora of smiling faces. Dr. Cedrick Gray, our school superintendent, was there giving high fives to all the incoming students. He wished them luck and commented on how nice and sharp they were looking. And they were! Cameramen were there documenting the happenings. Dr. Everly, Senora Moss, and Ms. Caston guided the students into the building and there the rest of the staff assisted in getting everyone to their correct places. The day went very smoothly after that. We have such great students and teachers at Davis!

Mrs. Willis is so happy to see her students!

The 5th graders were so focused, I don't think they knew I was there!

Open House 2013

Open House is always one of my favorite events at Davis. Summer holiday is ending and so it's back to more rigorous schedules and structure. And what a great way to begin our new school year by getting to see old friends and thinking about the new friends we might make... discovering who our new teacher will be... gathering new school supplies... getting excited about all the wonderful knowledge we will be learning! It sure is a wonderful time of year. I love it!

One former student and one brand new... and two "old' ones! ;)

It's always great to see some former students!

Checking out who the new classmates will be..

Welcome back! I think this is going to be a great year!
