Lunch in the Library

As students in grades 2-5 have been reading and taking AR quizzes throughout the nine weeks, they have been earning prizes like bookmarks, pencils, and erasers as they work their way to reaching the point goal that has been established for them. (The goals are individualized for each person.) One of the special choices in AR prizes for students in grades 3-5 who reach their point goal is a coupon for lunch and recess in the library. I love that so many students are excited about and choose this option! Students who turn in their lunch coupon are allowed to bring a friend who has also reached 100% of their AR goal. I think this is a great way to celebrate a nine week's worth of reading! Here are some of our recent lunchers-

Some 3rd graders wanted to watch the PBS show SciGirls during their recess time.
SciGirls is a show that features girls putting science and engineering to work
in their everyday lives. I'm a fan of it!

Because it was National School Lunch week, we had parents join us for
Lunch in the Library. One father and son had a good
game of chess going during their recess time!

Celebrate Reading!

Every year, students in the Jackson Public School District are asked to read and write about 3 books over the summer months to help prevent the loss of reading skills between school years. Davis Magnet students are known to be great readers and participants in this summer reading program. Our school was once again named the Top School in the elementary division for our high number of reading logs that were turned in. Dr. Grigsby received our plaque at the Mississppi Children's Museum's summer reading celebration.

At Davis, we recognized students who completed their 3 summer reading logs by having a school dance in the auditorium with Dr. Grigsby deejaying. Students that read and logged 9 books were allowed to have a blue jean day! Everyone danced and sang and had much fun!

We had 64 Davis students go the extra mile and read and write reading logs for at least 20 books. These students had an additional celebration at the MS Children's Museum by having an evening to themselves to play.

I love that we have so many supportive families that help students read and stay on top of their education... even in the summer! Thank you for your dedication and hard work!

Here are some pictures of the fun (some of them are a little blurry due to the dancing):

Lookin' out my window, and what do I see?

The Kona Ice cart!

What a refreshingly cool treat for a warm Friday afternoon! Thank you parents for helping us with this fundraiser. It is off to a great start!

And on top of it being Kona Ice day, the fifth graders had a "free dress" day... extra awesome!

Even the teachers got in on the good times!

First Week of School

We've had quite a successful first week of school. Students have been coming on time and seem excited about getting back into the swing of things. The teachers in the auditorium in the morning have planned something fun for each morning so the students will look forward to finishing breakfast quickly and joining in. Today was Film-Flick Friday! Students are anxious to begin reading and taking AR quizzes... which I am thrilled to hear! I am getting everything set up so that books can be checked out with the 2nd - 5th grade classes next week. The first graders will follow suit soon, as well.
I spoke with Mr. Roberts-the Spanish teacher, Ms. Cosnahan- the music teacher, and Mrs. Ross- the computer technician, and we were all so proud of the students' behavior during their special subject classes this week, and this gets us excited about the new year! In these special subject classes, students have been focusing on the PYP attitude of cooperation. Davis Magnet students are considered being an "international student" by demonstrating cooperation, collaboration, and leading or following as the situation demands. Check with your child each Monday to see if he or she was an international student for the past week.

Don't forget to check the Davis Magnet web page each week to find notes from the principal and classroom newsletters! http://davis.jpsms.org/
Here are some pictures from our first day.

And so it begins...

The 2014-15 school year has officially begun, and we are off to a great start! It was awesome seeing our Davis students and hearing about their summers at our Open House night on Thursday. Students had back-packs and school supplies and smiles on their faces. They were happy to meet our new principal, Dr. Grigsby, meet their new teachers, and see friends they haven't seen all summer. I was thrilled to hear that they've been reading this summer and that they are excited to check out some new books from our library. It was especially nice seeing some of our former students and hearing of their great achievements in middle and high school. Our former students always talk about how much they loved their years at Davis. I've loved my years at Davis, too. Looking at all these smiles, I say we're off to another one worth loving!

Mr. Clark is always up to something!

Sad to lose one Johnson, happy to gain another!

Some former Davis students. What beautiful, strong girls!

Hart is happy his younger brother is joining him this year. We are too!

I asked some students to document the back-to-school night event. I loved seeing their point of view in the photographs. Here are some of their shots:
